THE LOGLINE

In the back alleys of Shinjuku, a young yakuza foot soldier makes an unforgivable mistake. His punishment: running Luma Coin Laundry, where the syndicate’s dirtiest work arrives by the bagful. What begins as a gritty crime drama dissolves into a fever dream, an exuberant dance sequence, and a glorious detergent commercial. The ultimate product demo: No Stain Survives.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE: THE YAKUZA DETERGENT MUSICAL

Made alongside Luma Taxi, Luma Suds was conceived to test how far I could push tonal whiplash using generative video. The brief invited directors to rethink commercial storytelling and resurrect unfilmable concepts.

I lived and worked in Tokyo for years, and I’ve always loved the contrast between the city’s hyper-stylized neon underbelly and its quiet, mundane neighborhood coin laundromats. Concocting a story where a mob hitman is condemned to do laundry duty felt like the perfect vehicle for a commercial parody.

The fun was in the tonal shift. We drop the audience into a dark, cinematic noir before blowing the roof off the building with a high-energy dance number and soap suds. It captured a top prize in Luma’s global competition and went on to serve as an official ad and Cannes Lions entry, proving that generative filmmaking can swing from moody cinema to pure pop spectacle in sixty seconds flat.
